Community Ambassador Spotlight | Gillian Haigh
Gillian Haigh has been climbing for over ten years and competed through her youth across Canada and internationally. Originally hailing from Calgary Alberta, Gillian moved to Vancouver to attend school at Emily Carr University of art and design. Her goals for climbing include competing in the World Cup circuit, and to develop opportunity for athletes in Vancouver and BC.
What are the top 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Live in Europe.
2. Go on a climbing road trip for 6 months.
3. Do an artist residency.
What’s your favourite colour?
Yellow or orange- I like something bright and sunny to brighten my day!
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t grow up too fast! There will be plenty of time to be an adult, enjoy being young while you can.
What is the most frustrated you’ve ever been with climbing?
This season I was competing at a competition at Bolder Climbing in Calgary and I couldn’t get off the ground on this problem. The worst part was that I knew the moves after were easy…. I just couldn’t get there… for five minutes. Anyways it turns out that I missed a start hold. It was a tough lesson but it showed the importance of keeping your cool and focus on having fun.
What are you working on for this competition season?
Dynamic moves, especially coordination moves… I’ve suffered lots of bumps and bruises over the past few months missing volumes and banging various limbs on holds but i’m getting there.
What are you most looking forward to this season?
All the new Ambassadors on the team! We are super lucky to welcome two new Ambassadors to our crew; Mika and Guian. Both are beasts and wonderful additions to the team. I am always blown away by all the amazing people in our community and so happy to be a part of it 🙂
