Community Ambassador Spotlight | Andrew Funk
Andrew has climbed for roughly half of his life, and has represented Canada on the World Stage multiple times as both a Youth and Adult competitor. After high school, a year of climbing outside resulted in multiple newsworthy ascents across the globe.
Andrew now studies Geological Engineering at the University of British Columbia, and is training hard to cement his reputation as a leading Canadian climber, both as an indoor competitor and outside on rock. If you made him choose, we’d wager real rock would win every time.
What’s your favourite style of climbing?
Precise, intricate, tensiony/squeezy boulder problems, where unless you find the perfect position and all the sneaky little tricks, it’ll feel desperate (if not impossible).
What advice would you give to your younger self?
Just have fun with things. Respect the process and the rest will come.
Where is your favourite climbing area?
Squaaaaaaaamish!!!!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spare time?
What inspires you and your climbing?
The process of wrestling a climb that once felt impossible into submission over the course of a session, a season, even multiple years. There’s always one exact moment in the process where, all of a sudden, you’re convinced that it’s possible. That’s one of the most exciting feelings there is.
