Community Ambassador Spotlight | Ben Hughes

Ben was born and raised in Vancouver and has been climbing for over 10 years. His focus is mostly on the Canadian competition scene, and represented Canada at the Youth World Cup in 2013. Ben’s love for competing is rivaled only by his love for real rock and he loves to get out to Squamish as much as he can!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy trail running, watching movies, and just kicking it with my friends.

Where is your favourite climbing area?

Bishop California. The scenery, quality of rock, and the vibes are second to none. Its seriously one of the best places on earth.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Korean BBQ all the way, I don’t think I could ever get tired of it!

What’s your favourite style of climbing? Least favourite?

I’m a big fan of slab climbing both indoors and outdoors. There’s something super satisfying about climbing hard slab boulders. My least favourite style would have to be steep compression climbing, simply due the fact that I really struggle with it.

What inspires your and your climbing?

My teammates and coaches are probably my biggest motivators, but almost everyone that climbs continues to inspire me one way or another. There’s always so much psych and good energy in this sport which makes it easy to keep going! Also I’m a big fan of watching climbing movies so Hard Grit is the ultimate one if you’re looking to feel inspired 😉
